Pilates is a conditioning program designed by Joseph Pilates as demonstrated in his book ‘Contrology’. Joseph devised a series of exercises and established principles of practice to develop a strong, stabilised and flexible core (abdominals, back, pelvic floor muscles and shoulder girdle) so that the whole body can be balanced, aligned and conditioned. It is a movement technique used worldwide by physiotherapist, dancers, athletes, sports scientist, physical therapists and many others specialised in movement and movement rehabilitation.
The benefits of Pilates:
STABILTY – through strengthening exercises one can improve stability of the joints and muscles leading to a better posture and a balanced physique
FLEXIBILITY – many exercises articulate the spine, muscles and joints which results in improved mobility, flexibility, agility and grace
STRENGTH – exercises that provide a gravitational challenge or have spring resistance strengthen the deep muscular structure framework of the body, known as the core, promoting body control, endurance and poise
TONE - most Pilates exercises engage eccentric contraction of the muscles causing them to tone and become longer and leaner
CO-ORDINATION – exercises that challenge balance, co-ordination, tempo and rhythm leads to better movement performance
RELAXATION – using the breath relieves stress as you learn to move with natural ease and experience less fatigue and tension. All Pilates exercises have breath as an essential component so that energy levels are restored and there is an overwhelming sense of mental alertness
PHYSIOLOGY – Pilates exercises have a wonderful effect on the respiratory, digestive and lymphatic systems along with improving blood circulation
REHABILITATON & INJURY PREVENTION – through alignment and posture correction and management, the body is coaxed into a dynamic condition, alleviating general stiffness, aches and pains. Muscles imbalances are corrected leading to enhanced sport performance
